What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a simple, emerging standard: a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives large language models a clean, curated map of your most important pages. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access, an llms.txt file tells AI engines what actually matters and how to describe it.
The format is small on purpose: a title, a short summary, optional detail, then grouped lists of links with a note on each. The live preview above is a working llms.txt example you can copy or adapt.
Be careful what you expect from this file
llms.txt is a proposal, not an adopted standard, and the evidence says it does not drive AI citations. Google's Gary Illyes has said Google does not support it and has no plans to. John Mueller compared it to the long-retired keywords meta tag and said large language models cannot use it to decide which site to surface. Ahrefs analyzed 137,000 domains and found that97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026, with the crawlers that actually produce citations making up roughly 1% of requests.
We previously described this file on this page as something that helps you get cited. That was wrong, and we corrected it. The file is not harmful and it is genuinely useful as a clean, curated, human-readable map of your site, including for agents you point at it directly. It is not a ranking or citation lever, and nobody should sell it to you as one.

How to create your llms.txt file
- 1. Add your site name and a one-line summary in the builder above.
- 2. Group your key pages into sections, with a short note on each link.
- 3. Copy the generated file, or download it as llms.txt.
- 4. Upload it to your site root, so it is served at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
Creating the file is a small, tidy job, and on current evidence it is not what gets you cited. Being named consistently across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews comes from being reachable by the crawlers that cite, structured so your answers can be lifted cleanly, and described consistently wherever those systems read about you. That is the conversation worth having next, and it is the one we would rather have with you than sell you a file.
