Why alt text matters three times over

An image without alt text is invisible to Google Images, silent to screen readers, and meaningless to the AI engines now describing pages to their users. One missing attribute costs you on all three fronts at once. This alt text checker finds every image on the page and grades what it carries.

Good alt text describes what the image actually shows, in one sentence, without an "image of" prefix and without a keyword list. A chart's alt should carry the chart's takeaway. A decorative divider should have an empty alt, which is correct markup, so screen readers skip it.

What this alt tag checker flags

Missing alt text is the headline offender, but the audit checks every image against six rules:

• Missing alt attribute entirely. Invisible to Google Images, screen readers, and AI engines alike.
• Empty alt on a meaningful image. Right for decoration, wrong for anything that carries information; the audit asks you to confirm the intent instead of guessing.
• Useless alt. Under 5 characters or a bare generic word like "image" or "photo" that names the category, not the content.
• Keyword-stuffed or over-long alt. Over 125 characters, or a word repeated three or more times, reads as spam.
• Junk filename. Camera or screenshot defaults like IMG_20260712.jpg waste a ranking signal.
• Missing width or height. The browser cannot reserve space, so the page shifts when it loads (CLS).

Fix the list, re-run, ship the page.
